It’s been a weekend full of soul work and connection. My first retreat is now in the books!! I’m in so much gratitude to these women who showed up not just physically but spiritually. Vulnerability requires courage and it’s powerful when practiced in an intimate setting. This weekend has shown me that people want authenticity, not perfection. And while I wanted everything to be seamless, spirit had a different plan. Rise Up Retreat was an incredible experience filled with activities like a cacao ceremony, sound bath healing, yoga, inner child healing and activation of the heart. And every year, I’ll share this experience again, and again, and again for healing, for remembrance and to honor those who lost their lives that day.

18 years ago today, I lived in Greenwich Village in a 175 sq ft apt.

I was a shy, naive, sheltered girl who just moved from St. Paul, Minnesota to the big bad city of Manhattan.

It was always noisy, and you’d hear the empty brown and green beer bottles from the night before being thrown into the garbage, horns honking like some sort of messed up morse code, people swearing and yelling at each other as if it’s their sweet words of good morning and police sirens going off in the distance were like my evening and morning lullabies.

18 years ago today started like any other day except it was my day off work at the hospital.

I was awoken with a loud BOOM.

Ugh construction noise.

There was something being repaired in this city every single day, and today was really no different. At least, that’s what I thought.

I disregarded it and fell back asleep.
Shortly afterwards, I received a call and found out that the WTC building was on fire. Even still, I though “Oh, a little fire -I hope everyone is OK”, but again, kinda just did my thing and relaxed in my tiny apt, opening up the window to let some light stream in between the almost rusted white window bars that kept me safe from burglars (that’s what I thought they were for). A while later, I turned on the TV and it was all over the news – A PLANE crashed into the WTC!
This was not a little fire. It was just some crazy accident … maybe the pilot was drunk or fell asleep? Perhaps the plane malfunctioned?
Then, as my eyes were glued to the TV screen, I, along with everyone else in this country, watched the second plane crash into the second tower.
Still in my PJs, I immediately slipped on my tennis shoes completely untied, ran outside to look down Thompson Street, and it was swarming with people already. We were all just standing there wondering what the hell just happened!? Hundreds to thousands of people, just like me, were watching, as bystanders, not really knowing what to do with ourselves. *continued in comments*

Now that I'm in my 40s, I'm seeing how real divorce, death, illness, unemployment and other major life problems are. I understand what they meant when they emphasized the importance of girlfriends.

Our girlfriends can read our mind and our emotions, intuitively recognize what needs to be done -- then do it. They can listen, empathize and show compassion. They can be our happy hour buddies or lunch dates on a random tuesday afternoon.

It's hard to nurture friendships when you're busy focused on career and raising kids. Some days, I will be honest, I don't have the time or energy.
But girlfriends meet you for yoga, bring bubble tea to your home, take your kids for froyo, plan a girls' beach trip for your Mother's Day, text words of encouragement and show love in a million heartfelt ways.

It's not about the quantity, necessarily, but the quality of friends we have in our lives. My intent is to connect you with a few high vibe women where you can create a closeness of friendships - not surface level friends. Ones where you can chat forever, laugh, cry if needed, drink too much boba or milk tea, talk about your kids or significant others - need I say more?

I’m thankful for my close women friendships. Life will always keep throwing lemons our way, but these women are there not just to make lemonade, but to add the tequila and make Lemon-strawberry Margaritas.
