When I am feeling overwhelmed, the sound of my two boys yelling in my house makes me want to throw a tomato at them. I’m ever so sensitive to loud noises and easily irritated by just about anything that breathes because my mind is on overdrive.
I’m tired, anxious, indecisive, worried and feeling out of control.
I just have TOO MUCH TO DO!!
Some of you may think it’s ironic for a Mindset Mentor to have these feelings but remember, I am human, afterall.
I think the benefit of doing the work I do is that I can recognize overwhelm and start to address it much quicker than I would have in the past…like within hours versus years.
Yes, sometimes it would take me YEARS – YEARS to figure out what I needed to do. By that time, the opportunity or significance of that decision was already long gone.
The only thing left were regrets, which only made me more miserable.
When I just stopped adding to the never-ending To-Do List, I stopped jumping from task to task and started to get refocused and completed one item at a time.
Mama became more Zen.
A zen mama is a happy home. Trust me guys.
So for the sake of your loved ones, if you are in the state of overwhelm, then read on.
Here are 2 ways for you to stop the swirl of overwhelm so you can experience and live the life in front of you, not worrying about all that stuff in the future, which most likely won’t happen anyway.
GROUND YOURSELF
I know, some of you may be completely lost now … just stay with me here.
Grounding yourself simply means to be present and feeling centered in your body no matter what is going on in this moment, right now.
People usually ground themselves before they meditate, calming their emotions and just slowing their mind down to begin relaxing their mind. This is a cool trick I learned to quickly ground myself – it should take you less than 2 minutes to do:
- Take two deep breaths – in through your nose, and out through your mouth
- Using your 5 senses (see, hear, smell, touch, taste), I want you to follow the 5-4-3-2-1 structure. Without thinking about it, just start to name off the following things:
- Using your eyes, say 5 things you see in your immediate field of vision
- What are 4 things you hear in this moment of overwhelm?
- What are 3 things you smell?
- What are 2 things you feel – not emotionally but something like you feel your toes in your socks, your hands on the table, etc.
- What is one thing you taste – even if it’s just the taste of your own mouth
By doing this, it interrupts your thought pattern of overwhelm and gets you focused on something else so that you can snap out of the never ending cycle of indirection.
Getting grounded will help you to refocus, with a clear head without the previous weight on your shoulders. You will see that you may have some more clarity on what step to take next.
MAKE A DECISION
Did you know the one common theme among the most successful people is? They make A DECISION. A DECISION. No one said it was the right or wrong decision, but the important thing is that part didn’t matter. What was vital to their success was that they did not sit there and overthink what to do next. They stopped the cycle of overwhelm and took action. So what if they failed? Successful people know that to get to their destination, it’s all about failing and trying to figure out how to get there.
If you don’t take the wrong step, how do you know which step is the right one? Success and failure go hand in hand.
So, just MAKE A DECISION, and don’t worry about the outcome. What is meant for you, will not pass you. The wrong turns are just a detours in the right direction.
You have this time right now. Each minute that passes becomes hours, days, months, years, decades of doing the same things that add nothing to your life – only takes things away – time with the people you love, memories that are never created, trips that are promised and never taken, nights up late instead of in bed with your spouse.
Once this has played out and passed, you will never be able to reclaim it.
Don’t let overwhelm hold you hostage. You have the power to set yourself free!
